چکیده

The measurement of the optical depth to free electrons, τr, in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) provides an important constraint on reionization, but is degenerate to more complex reionization models. Small angular-scale CMB measurements of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) and Ostriker-Vishniac (OV) effects have the potential to break this degeneracy. We calculate the OV signal for various extended reionization histories described by a simple analytic form. These models are parametrized by ∆z , the duration of the reionization event. For reionization histories with identical values of τr , the OV amplitude at l = 3000 (C3000) differs by ≈ 20% between the models with ∆z = 0.1 and ∆z = 3.0. We demonstrate that the removal of the z . 6 component of the OV signal will significantly enhance the ability to differentiate between reionization histories, with C3000 varying by a factor of ∼ 2 between the models with ∆z = 0.1 and ∆z = 3.0. If the low-redshift OV and related kSZ signal can be adequately subtracted, this would provide an important observational constraint on extended reionization models. Cross-correlation studies with CMB polarization maps

The free-electron population during the reionized epoch rescatters the cosmic microwave background ~CMB! temperature quadrupole and generates a now well-known polarization signal at large angular scales. While this contribution has been detected in the temperature-polarization cross power spectrum measured with Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data, due to the large cosmic variance associat...

Cross-correlation studies between CMB temperature anisotropies and 21 cm fluctuations

0556-2821=20 During the transition from a neutral to a fully reionized universe, scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons via free electrons leads to a new anisotropy contribution to the temperature distribution. If the reionization process is inhomogeneous and patchy, the era of reionization is also visible via brightness temperature fluctuations in the redshifted 21 cm line emi...

Lecture notes on the physics of cosmic microwave background anisotropies

We review the theory of the temperature anisotropy and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, and describe what we have learned from current CMB observations. In particular, we discuss how the CMB is being used to provide precise measurements of the composition and geometry of the observable universe, and to constrain the physics of the early universe. We also briefly ...

Secondary CMB anisotropies in a universe reionized in patches

In a universe reionized in patches, the Doppler effect from Thomson scattering off free electrons generates secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. For a simple model with small patches and late reionization, we analytically calculate the anisotropy power spectrum. Patchy reionization can, in principle, be the main source of anisotropies on arcminute scales. On larger angular ...

Reionization and cosmic microwave background distortions: A complete treatment of second-order Compton scattering.

The ionization history of the universe provides a major source of ambiguity in constraining cosmological models using small angular scale microwave background anisotropies. To clarify these issues, we consider a complete treatment of Compton scattering to second order, an approach which may be applicable to other astrophysical situations. We find that only the O(v) Doppler effect, and the O(vδ)...
